Roger Wilson talks democracy — not politics. Democracy is an ideal, thought up by man which amongst other things gives us the right to vote for an MP to represent us in Parliament. This limited right has not changed in hundreds of years, not since the speed of a horse was the fastest a man could travel. Times have moved on but our democracy has not. Being man made the ideal can be up graded to reflect modern life and Roger's talk, based on his booklet Democracy UK, addresses the reasons why we have been stuck in a democratic time warp and then moves on to offer up a series of alternatives. For all the good intentions of MPs the current system is not working. Changes in the political framework has not offered up a solution to our representation and, therefore, we need to consider the underlying fundamental, democracy, and bring it in to line with modern day requirements before we consider what the politics should be. We live in a democratic state and our democracy has to be fit for purpose; bring it out of the age of the horse and then our politics will be representative. The alternatives are out there we just need to motivate ourselves. Contact by email — crosseway@gmail.com
Roger will not talk politics. The politics of the day are not the subject of his book nor his talk. He will not talk about personalities but there will be references to past legislation to illustrate his argument for evolutionary change.
An analyses of the current system of representation and governance and why it is falling apart and failing to unite society. Avoids the easy path of criticizing the current system of representation and the governance it produces but provides an array of alternative options for the audience to consider. His title for this is Total Voting.
Roger's objective is to make his audience think about their democracy and the alternatives. Disagreement is welcome on the understanding that the objectors arguments are backed up with reasoning.
The array of alternatives range from the selection of Parliamentary candidates to the election of a Prime Minister and cabinet, The origin of legislation and it's path through Parliament and onto the statute book and enactment. The role of MPs, Ministers, the Prime Minister, the second chamber and the select committees. The value of integrated opposition through to the honest representation by business and lobby groups to represent their case in the interests of the nation first.
